# Tassel Count and yield estimate

Order a Field Scale Tassel Count in FieldAgent Web, read tassels per acre, compare zones, and add a Kernel Count activity to turn the count into a yield estimate.

A tassel count measures tassels per acre in corn from low-altitude photos taken across the field after tasseling. FieldAgent counts the tassels in each sample photo and returns a **Tassel Count** layer (one labeled dot per sample) and a **Tassel Count Heatmap**. With a kernel count from the field, the layer also estimates yield in bushels per acre.

Tassel Count is included in the Advisor and Advanced plans.

The demo below is a working, view-only copy of FieldAgent Web on the tassel-count field of the Sentera Demo Account: the heatmap, the 41 samples with their annotated photos, the two hybrid-comparison zones, and the kernel count that turns the count into a yield estimate. Follow the steps in the copy, or press **Show me** to watch each one.

## Fly and order

1. Plan the flight in FieldAgent Mobile with the flight specification from the product's catalog page, and fly it once tassels have emerged.
2. Import the photos into the field; see [Import imagery in FieldAgent Web](/fieldagent-documentation-updates/imagery/import-imagery-in-fieldagent-web.md).
3. Click **ORDER ANALYTICS**, choose **Field Scale Tassel Count**, select the survey, enter the **Seeding Rate** and **Row Spacing**, and click **SUBMIT**. See [Order analytics](/fieldagent-documentation-updates/ordering/order-analytics.md).

FieldAgent emails you when the count is ready.

## Read the results

Open the field, click the layers icon in **Map Layers**, and under the survey date turn on **Tassel Count**. Each dot is a sample photo labeled with its tassel density, colored from red (lowest) to green (highest). Click the layer name to open **Tassel Count Details**.

| Panel item                       | Meaning                                                                                                                                       |

| **Display Property**             | The value shown on the dots: **Tassels (per acre)** or **Tassels (per image)**, the raw count in each photo.                                  |
| **Sample Count** and **Average** | The number of samples and their mean.                                                                                                         |
| **Hide Excluded Data Points**    | Removes samples you excluded in the image viewer.                                                                                             |
| **Yield Estimate**               | The estimated bushels per acre, once a kernel count activity exists for the field (see below).                                                |

| **Zone Statistics**              | **Minimum**, **Average**, and **Maximum** tassels per acre for the field boundary and each zone.                                              |

Click a dot to open the sample photo in the image viewer. **Count Details** shows the **Tassels Detected** per acre and the **Row Spacing** for that photo; the **ANNOTATION** view marks the rows FieldAgent found and every tassel it counted. Step through samples with **PREVIOUS** and **NEXT**, and use **EXCLUDE DATA POINT?** for a sample that should not count toward the average. ## Estimate yield

The tassel count gives ears per acre. To estimate bushels per acre, FieldAgent needs the kernels per ear, which you count by hand.

1. In the field, pick several representative ears (at least three), and for each count the number of kernel rows and the number of kernels in a row.
2. In FieldAgent Web, open the field, click the plus icon in the **Field Activities** card, select the field's crop season, and choose the **Kernel Count** activity type. Enter the date, then the **Kernel Rows** and **Kernels/Row** for each ear, using **ADD ANOTHER EAR** as needed. Click **SUBMIT**. 3. Open the **Tassel Count** layer again. In **Yield Estimate**, select the kernel count activity. The estimated bushels per acre is shown.

The estimate combines tassels per acre from the count with the average kernels per ear you entered, so it is only as good as the ears you sampled. Re-enter kernel counts later in the season if the ears fill differently than expected.
