# Canopy Cover

Map how much of the ground your crop covers, and compare flights to see how fast the canopy is closing.

Map how much of the ground your crop covers, and compare flights to see how fast the canopy is closing. Canopy Cover is included in the Advisor and Advanced plans. It works on any crop.

***

## Fly and order

{% hint style="warning" %}
Canopy cover photos are captured with negative overlap. This means the images do not share any area with each other, and they can't be stitched into a mosaic. Don't order a mosaic on a canopy cover survey, or it ends up as a [failed order](/home/fieldagent-web/ordering/why-cant-i-order.md#the-order-failed).
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Fly the field

Canopy cover has one [flight specification](#flight-specification) for early in the season and another from mid to late season. Pick your sensor in **Flight settings for**, then fly to the settings for the crop's stage.

{% @sentera-analytics-finder/finder content="audience=support\&view=fly\&product=canopy-cover" %}

To plan the flight in FieldAgent Mobile, see its [support site](https://support.senterasensors.com/home/fieldagent-mobile-ios/).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Import the photos

[Import the photos](/home/fieldagent-web/imagery/import-imagery-in-fieldagent-web.md) into the field.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Order the analytic

Open the field and use the Order Analytics button:

<div align="center"><img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-b4faf6534b7a4a02e886382cc7d38b5ca2ed2522%2Ffa-web-ui-btn-order-analytics-1x.png?alt=media" alt="ORDER ANALYTICS button"></div>

Choose **Field Scale Spot Scout Canopy Cover**, then the survey. Click **SUBMIT**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
FieldAgent emails you when the analytic is ready. The results are added to the survey as two layers, **Canopy Cover** and **Canopy Cover Spot Scout Heatmap**. Repeat for each flight of the field to build the time series.
{% endhint %}

***

## Read the results

Start with the layer named **Canopy Cover**. It puts a dot on each sample photo, labeled with its canopy cover in percent and colored from white (lowest) to dark green (highest).

1. In **Map Layers**, click the layers icon <img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-63327f0a1a9668fc0304dc7f1979ade39d585d00%2Ffa-web-icon-layers.svg?alt=media" alt="layers icon" data-size="line">.
2. Under the survey date, turn on **Canopy Cover**.
3. Click the layer name to open its details.

<figure><img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-1d72230d1a4715e2fd0e4084e17cd8df8602771c%2Ffa-web-canopy-cover-layer.jpg?alt=media" alt="The Canopy Cover layer on a potato field: 97 dots labeled with percentages between 4.87 and 28.4, colored from white to dark green, and the Details panel showing Display Property percent, Sample Count 97, Average 20.6, the Colorization histogram and a white-to-green Color Scale"><figcaption><p>The later flight, four days after the first.</p></figcaption></figure>

To see the cover across the whole field, turn on **Canopy Cover Spot Scout Heatmap** from the same survey. The percent is measured only where the photos were taken, and the heatmap fills in between them.

### Try it in the demo

The demo below has a 64-acre potato field measured from 97 sample photos. Turn on **Canopy Cover**, open its details, then add the heatmap.

## Check a sample

Click a dot to open its photo in the [image viewer](/home/fieldagent-web/view-and-analyze/photo-dots-and-image-viewer.md). The annotated view paints the canopy FieldAgent detected in green, so you can see what the percent was measured from.

<figure><img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c116fe9336040448bbd6ed97c075e1f122544a35%2Ffa-web-photo-canopy-annotation.jpg?alt=media" alt="A canopy cover sample photo annotated: the detected canopy painted green over bare soil between rows"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Track canopy closure

Once two flights have their results, compare their heatmaps.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Turn on both heatmaps

Turn on **Canopy Cover Spot Scout Heatmap** for both surveys.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Match the colorization

Each heatmap is colored over its own range, so the same color can mean a different percent on each date.

Open the later layer and set **Colorization** to **By Range**. Drag the range handles to the lowest and highest percent you want to compare, and read the values in the boxes under the slider. Turn on **Include Out-of-Range Values** so the rest of the layer stays colored.

<figure><img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-59da28a504b6777dd4bba1921880ede90dfc7c3e%2Ffa-web-canopy-cover-by-range-later.jpg?alt=media" alt="The 06-14-2026 Canopy Cover heatmap of a potato field with Colorization set to By Range from 6.20 to 18.0 and Include Out-of-Range Values on: the field is mostly dark green"><figcaption><p>06-14-2026: range, By Range and Include Out-of-Range Values highlighted</p></figcaption></figure>

Then do the same on the earlier layer, with the same two values. The handles can't go past a layer's own lowest or highest value, so pick two values that both dates reach.

<figure><img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-9735c85b265a320dca7b5adbfcdd915d6e839e7d%2Ffa-web-canopy-cover-by-range-earlier.jpg?alt=media" alt="The 06-10-2026 Canopy Cover heatmap of the same field with the same By Range values, 6.20 to 18.0, and Include Out-of-Range Values on: the field is mostly light green"><figcaption><p>06-10-2026: range, By Range and Include Out-of-Range Values highlighted</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Compare

Hide and show the upper layer, or lower its **Opacity**, to see where the canopy has closed and where it hasn't.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Read the averages

In each layer's **Zone Statistics**, read the average for the field boundary and for any [zone you've drawn](/home/fieldagent-web/view-and-analyze/zones-and-zone-statistics.md). The difference between the dates is the growth over that interval, here from 12.6 to 20.7 percent in four days.

<figure><img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8a1bbc5bfe13e763eca6476f69f61b937c074635%2Ffa-web-ui-canopy-zone-stats-later.png?alt=media" alt="Zone Statistics of the 06-14-2026 heatmap: Field Boundary 64.14 ac, 20.7 Average" width="368"><figcaption><p>06-14-2026</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" icon="lightbulb" %}
Areas that stay behind the rest of the field between flights point to emergence, moisture or pest problems worth walking to. A [Stand Count](/home/fieldagent-web/analytics/stand-count.md) on the same field shows whether a thin canopy comes from missing plants or from smaller ones.
{% endhint %}

### Try it in the demo

In the demo below, both heatmaps of the potato field are already on the map, four days apart. Give them the same colors, then hide the later one to compare.

## Use the results

* If the field was imported from Operations Center and **Send Map Layers to Field Analyzer** is on, the heatmap appears in the field's [Field Analyzer](/home/fieldagent-web/integrations/fieldagent-and-operations-center.md) when the order completes.
* Turn the heatmap into a prescription with [Zone Rx (Beta)](/home/fieldagent-web/export-and-share/zone-rx-prescriptions.md).
* Download the samples as GeoJSON, CSV or Shapefile from **Download Files** in the layer details.
* [Create a report](/home/fieldagent-web/export-and-share/create-a-report.md) to share the layer as a PDF.

## Flight specification

Pick your sensor in **Settings for** to see how to fly it early in the season and from mid to late season.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://support.senterasensors.com/home/fieldagent-web/analytics/canopy-cover.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
