# Measure a distance or an area

Get the length of a line or the area of a shape you draw on a field, in imperial or metric units.

The ruler on a field's map gives you a quick distance or area. For a layer's values inside a shape, [draw a zone](/home/fieldagent-web/view-and-analyze/zones-and-zone-statistics.md) instead.

#### Open the measure tool

Click a field in the **Fields** panel, then click the ruler icon <img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-2ed7fdc8ed8e938a8626458fd21f8f2b09566d15%2Ffa-web-icon-measure.svg?alt=media" alt="measure icon" data-size="line"> that appears on the map.

#### Choose what to measure, and the unit

Choose **Distance** <img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-a9f918a6f487d74bfbae4bd034d81716db4a1256%2Ffa-web-icon-distance.svg?alt=media" alt="distance icon" data-size="line"> or **Area** <img src="https://2791052504-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVt6flh3S4tohPAjrSP91%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-91c6b935823771c73a6638910a20f7bd71e9c0bc%2Ffa-web-icon-area.svg?alt=media" alt="area icon" data-size="line">. Then pick an imperial or metric unit from the **Unit** menu.

#### Draw the line or shape

Click the map to place each point. Double-click the last point to end a line. For an area, double-click the last corner, or click the first corner, to close the shape.

The measurement then appears as a label on the map.

#### Close the tool

{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
No number while you click? That's expected. The tool shows nothing until you finish the line or shape, so double-click the last point.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://support.senterasensors.com/home/fieldagent-web/view-and-analyze/measure-a-distance-or-an-area.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
